Heat and Urban Political Ecology Workshop
Mon 11 May 2026 - Tues 12 May 2026
As chronic heat becomes the ‘new normal’ baseline in Europe, what does an urban political ecology perspective add to our understanding of city life under heat? Is there life beyond the air-conditioning technofix?
Katie Meehan, in collaboration with Hug March, convened a workshop on the urban political ecologies of heat in metropolitan Europe aimed at tacking these questions. Hosted by Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), co-sponsored by European Urban and Regional Studies, the workshop brought together scholars examining how extreme heat is unevenly experienced, governed, and contested across European cities.

Dublin EUROWISE survey
Mon 21 July 2025 - Fri 1 August 2025
The Plumbing Poverty team — along with a team of enumerators from King’s College London — organised and carried out a large-scale survey of household water insecurity in Dublin, Ireland, one of our case cities where water issues materialise in quiet, invisible, and troubling ways.
Our enumerators gathered stories of tap water avoidance, brown water from the taps, infrastructure disrepair, flooding and leaks, fear of lead and other contaminants, Irish heat waves, and a strong sense of community reliance and solidarity.

Water and Housing Insecurities in Europe and the USA
Wed 28 Aug 2024 – Fri 30 Aug 2024
Organizers: Katie Meehan | Lucia Cerrada Morato | Lucy Everitt
In the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008, residents in postcrisis countries are living in precarious housing situations without secure or reliable access to basic services—including safe drinking water and sanitation. For the 2024 Annual Conference of the RGS-IBG in London, we organized two sessions (a paper session and a World Café) to bring together cutting-edge research on the housing-water nexus in high-income countries.
